How about this 383?

Its a price quote from a local engine shop

3504 bolt main
480/230 cam
GM 2.02 1.60 heads
roller tipped rockers
hyp. pistons
moly rings
GM 400 crank
gm rods
perfomer intake
completely balanced and arp bolts used
he said the smallest he built with the combination had 410 hp and the largest was 450 hp
the price is $2200
I will have to add a carb, distributor, and all the front accesories

Yeah, that does sound a little cheap to me. Mine was 2000 just for them to take the motor and do all new seals, gaskets, rings, honing, performer RPM cam, new 400 crank, new springs, rods, bigger valves and valve seats, new timing chain, new pistons, and cleaning up the block and heads and then putting everything together again minus the intake.

That price sounds about right for reconditioned parts. Reground crank, recon rods, cylinder heads, etc. I paid $2500 for just my shortblock, forged stuff adds to the cost.

He regrinds the crank in house and redoes the heads, the stuff is reconditioned but his engines come with a warranty on them and he built the engine in my grandpas chevelle so i have faith in the guy, i have found it to be a pretty good deal

does the HP sound reasonable?

still sounds way to cheap and like he's saying he does something that maybe he doesn't and you wouldn't know after the engine is together. if you trust him go ahead. without a dyno sheet a HP estimate is just a guess.

Something that's a big "if" with that combo is the rods.
Factory rods? With 5.56" rods and 350 pistons, it can keep the cost down, but there are better choices. I'd ask about the rod length, and if that combo you mentioned comes with the 5.56" rods, see about maybe getting some 5.7" rods.

Thats really not "too" bad....just depends on the parts he's using, such as the heads. He may be using some cheap smogger heads that they have cleaned up, ported etc. Also, if he's using "stock" 350 rods, Id pay a little extra and get some 5.7 or even 6.0in rods....much less stress on the motor. Id ask to speak to some of his other customers, but if you trust him, go for it. Good luck.....

I know he does good work, like i said he built my grandpas big block for his chevelle and it is great and he also builds race motors and i have seen them in action and they have lots of power and i see him at the races so i know he stands behind what he builds im still giving it some thought and making sure how much it will cost me total with a trans rebuild and all the other stuff that goes with a new engine

i just built a 402 for my camaro and i have 3700 in it with basically replacing the same parts you list plus machine work. i do my own valves and heads plus cam bearings, freeze, and oil plugs so there is no cost there.
