My car runs like @ss!

I recently busted half my valvesprings. When I replaced them, I went ahead and added 1.6:1 rocker arms. Now, I have to let my car warm up for about 10 minutes before going anywhere or it dies immediately. It's been almost 80 degrees outside the last few days! Before, I would let the car warm up for a couple of minutes when it was about 30 or 40 out and had no problems. I've played with my timing, but the problem doesn't go away. Would adjusting my carb help? I have an 82 camaro and the computer isn't hooked up to anything anymore. Everything is mechanical.

Hmm, well first of all, what happend to cause all the valvesprings to break? Is there possibility of other mechanical damage in the engine? Have you noticed an overall power loss? Sorry I'm not much help, this one sounds like a stumper.

Sounds like you may have lost a lobe ot two on the cam. The springs may have coil bindined and broke. may need to check the cam.

Apparently, the person who had the motor before me felt that the spring pressure on the driver's side wasn't high enough. He put shims on the springs on that side and only that side for some reason. He put about 20,000 miles on the engine and I put another 6000 or 7000 before they finally broke on me. Once the car warms up for about 10 minutes, it seems fine except for some slight hesitation here and there. Power has increased with the addition of the rocker arms.

Well, observe the choke during the warm up process. If the choke is staying closed when you try to drive off, I could see that as a cause for killing the engine.

Also, what is your cold idle rpm speed?

If it broke half the valve springs, it probably wiped out the cam. It may have pulled studs, bent push rods, and various other malfunctions.

What cam is in there? How much lift? What springs did you put in there? What will fit?

check your choke (wire it open for testing).
check your camshaft for lift at the rockers.
check your valve lash.

But if it were an internal mechanical problem, wouldn't it occur all the time rather than just during the warm up period??? And he said overall power isn't affected, so it couldn't be a broken cam/lifter/etc. I still think it would be something with the choke.

Try posting this question on the carburetor forum and see if anybody there has experienced this before.
