the rads are all the same no matter what year 3rd gen you have.. all plastic tank crap!! it could cool it though!?? with the dual fans! but, it might not cool good hp really good!! 400 sbc huh??? like you alrady my man!! the 400's are a prob to cool already, so, i say no way after all are the heads steam ported?? shouldnt ask thats a gimme. but with a 4000 no!

I think with a 400hp 400 you would probably want to get an aluminum radiator from be cool or something and maybe keep the dual fan setup, that would be your best bet. Like already said those 400 do already have cooling problems.

There are other things that have as much impact, or more, on the cooling system's performance, compared to the radiator. Run a 75-25 water-AF mix, a good water pump (NOT a stock one from GM or anywhere else), run enough timing advance and correct fuel mixture, use the correct head gasket with steam holes, keep it clean and scale free inside, keep it free of leaves and debris on the outside, make sure your lower air dam is intact.

I have had a 400 in my 83 for about 10 years now. I have a stock IROC radiator with the aluminum core and plastic tanks (which seems to cool better than the much heavier brass one it came with) and the stock HO single electric fan; I lived in the deep South until a few months ago and ran tha air conditioner non-stop for months at a time in 90+ degree temps, even then it didn't overheat.

I have 186 heads.

My cooling system consists of:

Certainly nothing magical or out of the ordinary there. I would like to upgrade the fan but have never gotten around to hunting down a good dual fan setup, or a good aftermarket one. I would also like to get a control head for the A/C out of a later model car, that has provisions for vacuum for a heater control valve. As it is, the 83 cooling system flows water through the heater core 100% of the time, which of course bypasses the radiator and recirculates hot water right back into the cool water return from the radiator. So there are still a couple of improvements I could easily make if I got motivated enough.
