Help, new motor and not satisfied
I just built an edelbrock copycat and raced a 97or 98 Z28 with a bigass cowl hood and some racing stripes. I dont know if he was modded or what. Well he pulled a good car length on me before I was able to catch up.(BTW he was an automatic) Even though I am not sure if he let off. Should I have not been able to beat a lS1? I just spent a lot of money on this motor with the assumption that I would be able to beat most stockers out there. What can I do that would make a difference???(gears?roller rockers?stall) Please help

First don't assume a lot about stock LS1's. I have a friend that is running elevens with a stock LS1 & headers, with 2.73 gears. That is N/A. They are great running engines, and he also tunes using a vericom.
Well first I would start planning a stroker engine and prepping a good set of aluminum heads for it. The rest of your setup sounds good already.

Is it the Edelbrock cam? If so, that's one place to make an improvement easily.
For a 350, try a Comp XE268H or XE274H if it's flat tappet, or their 276HR or XR270H10 if it's a roller motor.
LS1s are no slouches. They're fast out of the box and respond very well to minor mods. There's no disgarace in losing a good race to one. "Most cars" Is just that, most cars: not every car. There'll always be somebody faster.
Stall makes a really huge difference with the gears you've got, and the more cam you run, the more difference it makes. That by itself would probably have put you ahead from the start then he would have been the one playing catch-up. Stall gives you launch that you lose when you give up low end torque for high end horsepower. If you run any of the cams I have put up there, you'll do best with about a 2800 RPM stall minimum.
Also, perfect your launch technique. You shouldn't have got beat that bad off the line. Work on getting it to leave hard without spin or wheel hop; most races (like yours) are won or lost in the first 60 feet.

Don't feel bad....it was an LS1 afterall!! Now if you got beat that bad by a stock LT1 then you've got problems! Don't sweat it too much!!
------------------
1986 Trans AM
305 TPI
200,000+ miles (speedo/odometer non-funtional! Odometer reads 142,000)
4 Wheel Discs
9 bolt Borg Warner Rear
Completely Stock
Soon to upgrade to a 350 converted from TPI to Carb, Edlebrock Carb, Edlebrock Performer RPM Intake, Headman Shorty Headers, Vortech Heads (possibly ported), comp Xtreme Energy cam, proform HEI distributor kit w/MSD 6-AL Ignition box!!
Current project: Keeping my car running until I get the money for the above mentioned project! :-)

Besides, i dont know too many people who would get a cowl hood and stripes if they havent done anything to their car....Well except me
I planned on having the 350 in at the same time as the stripes...too bad i had to wait and now have a couple more months to go with stripes and a measly little l03
