Bad Axle Bearings?
Bad Axle Bearings?
My factory posi G80 rear end has been making a faint grinding noise ever since I bought it a year ago. Since then I've always added posi additive, and changed my diff fluid regularly. I took it to a fairly reputable shop and they stated that one of the axle bearings was bad. They wanted to charge between $400-$500 including parts and labor to repair it. My question is this, I've been thinking about a gear swap anyway and looked at the Richmond gear sets from Jegs. These come with installation kits including bearings. Are these included bearings axle bearings? Would it save money to go ahead and have the whole kit installed?
Thanks

I wouldnt get richmonds, they are noisey as hell. Even when setup properly. Go with precision gears or strange or gm. Some kits come with axle bearings, some do not. You have to check with manufacturer. This is my opinion.

You don't have to change the gear, or really even touch it, to replace an axle bearing. The bearing is about $12 and the seal about $4, and the only tools you need are a ½" socket, a 5/16" 6-point wrench, a hammer, and a 6'piece of water pipe. Odds are your axle is wiped out too though, you'll need to have one of the correct spline (probably 26 in your case) on hand. L and R axles are the same. There are also "repair" bearings available, that you can use if the axle isn't completely annihilated.
