Is this cam to big for my combo?
Is this cam to big for my combo?
Im rebuilding a engine for my V8 S10 truck and I was wondering if I had picked the wrong cam.
Here is some info on the engine:
ZZ4 block bore 4.00 compression 10:1
Scat crank 3.48
Eagle IRS rods 5.7
128 Corvette ally heads ported but with 1.94-1.55 valves the head is about 190cc
Stealth Ram intake with 52mm TB and 24 lbs injectors
ECM Commander 950
The cam is a Hydraulic Roller from Compcam and the number are like this 224@050 and 230@050 with .503 and .510 lift with 1.5 rockers, the center line is 112 and I have it advanced 6* to get a little better low end, I have been told that this cam is good for the Stealth Ram but I dont know what it will do.
Tranny 700R4
Think I have 3.07 gears, my old engine is turning 2000 rpm when Im at 60 mph and I would think the new engine will do the same.
This engine is going into a 86 S10
The only thing Im worried about is that this cam will not have much vaccume and that it will idel bad and may need a higher converter.
What kind of MPG would I get with this cam? will it be really bad?
Would a ZZ4 cam be better?
Thanks for any info

That cam should work pretty good for you. Yu'll hear the idle but its not super radical.
As with any larger than stock cam, you're speeding up the rpm range where the motor is efficient.
(raising the engines sweet spot, where it makes the best power)
So you want to increase the rpm that the motor cruises at, on the hyway. (higher rear gearing)
It will drive fine with the 3.XX gear.
But will go even better with some 3.73's.

good cam choice for the hsr. thats the cam i'd get if i was bolting on a hsr manifold.
need new gears. 3.73's would be fine.
the cam you have is better than the zz4 cam IMO
wanna get a little bit more power out of your cam? go with crane gold 1.6 rr's for centerbolt valve covers, or comp cam pro-magnum 1.6 rr's if you've got perimeter valve covers. your lift will change from .503/.510 to .537/.544
with the stealth ram though, it likes a lot of timing and a lot of fuel pressure top end from what i understand... hope i helped a lil

So you guys think I should be ok with that cam, that is great because I hate to have to change it now.
I was thinking about useing a 1.6 rocker but then I thought I would use a 1.5 to make the cam look smaller but maybe now I will go with the 1.6.

About the only thing to worry about is to make sure you have adequate valve springs. No 1.25" diameter onees will be enough, especially if you go to 1.6 rockers. You really need to step up to 1.45" ones. Your heads have to be machined to accomodate that.

you will be fine with that cam,i would suggest a larger stall, that s-10 should have enough gear (3.42)to be a benifit come visit us s-10 guys at www.s10v8.com and check out some wild combos,i had a comp cams 230@.050,560*,110*lobe center in my bird i took it out cause it was a bit aggressive but like the gear head i can be at times i will be putting it back in,it sounds sooo cool you will find that a stall of about 2600 will be good but a 3500 will be sikkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!
