Redoing CAM What do I need to do?
I am about to tear into my engine to replace the cam I put in there last summer. Last time I did this, it was a disaster and only by luck is the car even running again.
So, can you guys step my through the process of swapping my cam out? I want it done right. Please don't use big words or technical terms, as I am still learning.
I have an 88 Trans AM tpi 350.
My main problem areas are:
what needs to be done before I even start (ex: Does the #1 cylinder need to be at tdc?)
finding tdc
timing
timing chain alignment and installation
general torque specs by feel(I don't have a torque wrench)
timing chain cover installation/removal
VALVE ADJUSTMENTS!
gaskets to use/avoid
sealants to use/avoid
where to use sealants/how much to use
where/how much to lube/oil stuff
thanks,
I am thinking about having AIM or Y! instant messenger running with a web cam while I do this if anyone would like to watch and/or answer/ask questions on the fly.

Get a repair manual and a torque wrench. Consumer books like Haynes tend to avoid the big tech words, or have a glossary to explain them. I don't have mine in front of me, but I know TPI is an appendix, and I don't recall if it has disassembly details. The factory shop manuals have more details, but not pictures and aren't as novice-friendly. These books will tell you what you need for sealants, torque specs, valve adjustment, etc.
When you install the timing chain/sprockets, align the dots with the small at 12 o'clock and large at 6 o'clock. When you do this, the engine is at the #6 cylinder firing TDC. Turn the crank one revolution and you'll be at the #1 firing TDC.
Get a torque wrench. You can get a decent 3/8" drive clicker for a reasonable price http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...itemnumber=807 . It doesn't make any sense to save $30 while risking an engine worth many hundreds to thousands of dollars.
