Pinging - 89 RS TBI

My friend has an '89 RS TBI that pings really bad when the engine is under load, like going up a long hill. Also at times it will make a noise like a ping but really fast almost a grinding noise and puff a little smoke... whats causing this? Timing?

Thanks

either hes using bad gas (below 89) or his timing is advanced past 0*BTDC.

Run some combustion chamber cleaner through it, Gumout makes some good stuff for it. Then run a few tanks of 91 octane. he might have had some bad gas...

It may be bad timing, bad (not just low octane) fuel, or maybe a restriction on the exhaust, like a clogged catalytic converter.

Yes, the timing should be checked 1st, thats what it usually is, but not always.

I'll check the timing first. It has a new exhaust system with no cat so I don't think thats it. If the timing is ok I'll run some cleaner and some high octane fule and see what happens.

Thanks

Isn't there something also about carbon buildup inside the EGR valve can cause pinging at low rpm/high speed engine operation? Or am I just thinking of port-fuel-injection?
