r12 to r134
Anyone out there do this? Does it work? Anyone ever heard of freeze12 and does that work?
I have a leak, and as usual they will use r-12 to verify it has a leak (like that isn't against all EPA regulations..) and then want to replace the compressor ($14,000,000) even though they never built up enough pressure for the compressor to turn over to find out that the compressor isn't even the problem. Then they'll want another $40,000,00 for the 3.5 lbs of r-12 to fill it back up, not including the new accumulator and new orafice tube and whatever $180,000,000 hose is the actual culprit to begin with.
Combine that with the fact that the '80 needs a new compressor for sure, and the 89 LeBaron needs one as well.
In other words I'm going to donate a few paychecks to keep cool and wanted to make sure I don't get convinced to switch to something that doesn't work.

In the long run the R134 will be cheaper. But it does not do as good a job. If it needs a major overhaul I would change over. But if it just needs freon, I would stick with the R-12.
spend the 234,000,000.00 for the R-12, you will be much happier in the long run. just make SURE they gaurantee the system is leak free, the Lebaron will probably be OK on 134 but the camaro's and bird's hate the stuff.
just me $.02 worth.

Well arent you the lucky one!?
I have done the full swap and system overhaul to 134.
Did it myslef and it works damn good, dont believe the hype that it dont work.
Dont take it to a shop, they will rape you for the work they actually do.
They most likely will not find a leak, they are hard to track down.
You will need a new/rebuilt compressor: 100$@Autozone, new dryer: 25$, new o-rings: 5$, 134 and oil: market price but its cheap, flush the hard parts, buy a new secret orrafice tube and adjust your pressure switch to a secret setting, then slap it all together.
Total parts should be less than 200$ plus an additional 100$ paid to me for the secret settings, LOL.
Call me for the fine details, all in all its pretty damn easy with the proper know how in your hip pocket.

We actually talked about this months ago, when you told me how you had the hookup on the cheap R12 from a source of yours but you didnt feel that you would be able to do me any favors for me in the cheap hookup dept, LOL, JK! Looks like your source has dried up anyway, just like your cool breeze in the car.
But anyway, I was on the fence back then as well, and was nervous BC alot of folk on this board say how bad it had went for them, I think that they just didnt know what the hell they are doing.
When we hook up I will take you for a roll in my car and you can feel the breeze for yourself.
Results talk, not hearsay. But dammit your gonna buy my gas if I gotta roll up to BFE and lend a hand, LOL.

I have 134a in my 91 v6 camaro and it works damn good, not as good as r12 but good enuff. the diffrence is not all that big so that you should conceder paying the price to stay with r12.
Some FYI for people that may not know. When shops test a/c, oil, p/s, atf leacks the add a die to the fluid(or gas) let the car run for some time and then get a black light to check for the die that was just placed into your car. a/c die looks neon yellow and all oil's look neon green. there are some other colors out there but i don't remember them know, i have always used those two colors. but chances are that some body had put a/c die in your car and all they had to do was look at you a/c system with a black light and know what was wrong. but if not then they where full of $hit, hence go some where else or do it your self.

I converted my 91 Formula over last summer when I bought it and the compressor was empty. Bought a little conversion kit at Autozone for like $45, added an extra PAG oil shot, and it's worked like a charm ever since. I know you're supposed to flush the system of all the R12 first, but since I was trying to drive the car home from VA to Dallas, TX in mid June (I bought it off eBay) and it was empty anyway, I didn't have much choice. Still running the original compressor, dryer, etc. YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), of course!!!!!

Hey Chris, I have a "Leak Seeker". Just got it last night & I'm going to use it when I get home from wk this afternoon (actually 3hrs). You're welcome to borrow it if you want to. I don't live that far from you. Dunlap & I17.
the retro-fit kits are good you just have to be 100% sure you dont have a leak. just make dam sure you flush the air out of the system. did one kit on a taurus and we werent sure if we had the leaks fixed apparently we didnt so now we have no A/C in it, the goodyear tire shop here in goodyear wanted $1500 for the replacement of the r12 compressor lines/dryer and another $90 per pound of r12; hint hint... the car isnt worth $1500.
Actually under my guidance I will be sure to force CG to have the system "sucked dow", vaccum for 60 mins at least.
That is the only way to do it right, no ifs ands or buts about it.
