Engine trouble on a 84 T/A...HELP!!
im having trouble starting my 305 5.0 4bbl...when trying to turn over, the engine fires but dosent turn over all the way....this is a cold start and hasnt been started all winter.....there is a hard metal to metal knocking sound coming from the passenger side while trying to turn over....i was told it could be the starter slipping, but want a couple opinions.....do u guys have any suggestions on what the problem could be or anything i can do or look for?......any help would be great
Air,
I'm having a little difficulty understanding exactly what is happening. Maybe I'm a little slow this morning....
When you turn the key, does the starter itself run? Does it turn the engine or just run by itself? (Is the crank moving?) If the engine is cranking, you said it "fires but doesn't turn over all the way". Does this mean that there is ignition, and the engine is firing but won't stay running? Or does it meant that the engine is cranking but doesn't actually fire and try to run?
I'm just a little confused, but then I could never even keep the towns straight. Menoninee or Menomonee - it all depends on what end of 29 you are on, which always baffles me. (I told you I was a little slow)

my friends dad likes to leave a wrench or something like it in the choke flap to help a stubborn engine start,I've never seen it not work. I hope you did the basics like check oil...check for spark/fuel,rule out the starter because the belts turn,is it cranking slow? try a fresh battery or use a charger with high current start feature.once you get it running, empty a can of chem tool down the throat, fill the tank, add chem tool there too.towards the end of my old 305s life cycle I would have too briefly hold the gas to the floor as I started it,quickly letting off once it fired up. good luck with your '84
There are two ways to start a hard starting 84:
* try rapidly pumping the gas pedal while turning the motor over. keep pumping when the engine catches... once you get it going, give it some smooth gas and hold rpms at about 2500-3500... slowly slow it down and it should smooth out.
* also... try holding the pedal down and starting it... when it catches... pump it then.
depends on whether you're flooding and choking it to death or too lean and not getting enough which method will work
also check your plugs, they may be oil-soaked.
