Dieseling at factory specs....

If anybody has any idead why a 1987 Chevy Camaro (305 V8 4bbl) with all new electronics would diesel at factory specs on its secondaries help! I have narrowed the problem down to richness in the carb, and adjusting the secondaries does in fact effect it, but only to extremes (rich or lean) - not to fine tuning.

sounds like the idle screw is turned too far, or a vacuum leak somewhere.

It idles at about 6, seems to flood itself if pumped even once at start. Sometimes bogs with a slight dead spot in the pedal I have sought to find if a vaccume leak exists, and as of yet have not discovered one. Everything for the TPS is still factory sealed (though the TPS is new). As for the idle screw, I havent really messed with it yet, and this somehow just started. Sometimes the diesel is intermittent, and frequently afterfire does happen intermittently as well. Sometimes, while driving, the car seems to bog and backfire on dips or at the start of uphill grades.

I have noticed as well, that when the car is driving at a steady pace (say going a solid 40 MPH) I can feel the car adjust up and down once in a while. If anybody can piece that together I really need the help. This all started at once.

Could be the effects of a slipped balancer ring.

Another thing, are you disconnecting the EST line when setting the base timing?

Ill have to look at everything Im doing while setting the idle on the tech pages. You know, today I watched the car as I shut it off at the store (I actually did it rather quickly after getting in Park) and it didnt diesel. So, when I got home I watched the Idle while in park. As I watched it slowly crept up, and then down, and then shot up to 1100 and sat there. When I shut the car off, diesel! Whay is this? Right now I have the high idle just where the tag reads it, the idle in drive just where the tag reads it, and Ive obtained my power back..... No bogs on dips, nothing, and the secondaries are set lower than factory....It only seems to diesel in intermittent phases, almost like its when its shut off that is determining if it diesels or not. If my details seem nit picky, or drawn out Im sorry. But it seems that any details may shed light here (as I am lost altogether about the cause). Any ideas thrown my way will be tried. Thanks.

Well, Mine deisels occasionally, But Im pretty sure thats Due to High Idle.

Ive set mine up a bit higher than it should be Because I have trouble keeping it Running On Cold Starts Due to Lack of Choke )

If I turn it off Directly after a period of Hard driving ( lots of pedal ) it deisels pretty bad. If I let it idle for a sec Its usually okay.

Its sorta a Pain, but not a huge deal in My Book )

High mileaged motors with lots of carbon build up in pistons, chamber's, etc will diesel to to carbon glow light off. If your idle is down at 600 when you shut it off and it still diesels I would say this could be a suspect. Have you tried putting 93 octane in it to see if it goes away?

Well, I have been considering the carbon, as the diesel seems to be 3-4 duration with an afterfire. I have used BG44X (and I know it can take quite a while to work) but it seems to have had little effect (almost 1 tank in and ready to check the filter after this tank is gone. The odd part is, when I play with the secondaries it seems to tweak the diesel (?). Luckily the car doesnt get hot. As for the base timing, Im not too sure about where its set, I bought the car from a collector who had plenty of these cars, and just had too many loose ends to busy up on getting mechanical with it. Although he knew the engine is good, it needed electronics etc. So I took it off his hands (very clean car excellent cond.) for a very good price, replaced all the sensors etc. Very mech. sound, just driving me nuts - its mocking me !
