Block ID ?
Hey guys i have never seen a block casting number like this. I just got a 350 core from a friend yesterday. THe block casting number is 010 thats it. Also on the front pad are C5Z101292 VO805TXB. THen on the back passenger side is C H 74, i'm not to sure if the C is correct.
Any idea what this is. Is is just a regular old 3970010 block or something.
THanks

The casting # is ALWAYS there, unless somebody has ground it off.
Look at the bell housing flange, right behind the driver's side head. Here's a pic of a block with some heads on it as an example. It's the top half of the pic.

Well i cleaned up the block a little and came up with this: 3 010. I also snapped a pic so check it out. Also it doesn't look like the block has been ground any.... so...
BTW I'm not stupid i know where to find the casting #.

I didn't intend to imply "stupidity"...
But it does look rather like it's probably a 3970010, since that date and VIN # format is consistent with that casting #.
That thing is very nearly funky in places, isn't it?

In some instances Chevrolet would alter casting numbers by hand after the part was cast. This was done to make use of existing stock after a major design change has taken place. The normal practice was to grind off a certain amount of numbers and hand stamp the new digits. These instances are fairly well documented however.
Any ideas? My pic didn't turn out to good, i will try again tomorrow.

well for what it's worth the "010"blocks were the ones with high nickel content and praised by builders such as smokey unick as the best blocks ever made.this was in the 80's tho and aftermarket blocks are arguably better, and a ton more expensive!in my opinion, keep it and have it magnafluxed and have the cylinder walls sonic checked for thickness.do you know if it has been overbored?if not, even with the missing #s i'd say you have an excellent starting point for a strong motor!

as far as I can tell, the onlyt casting number that fits the numbers you have is 3970010
which is
3970010....302.....69....4...Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69....2...Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80...2 or 4
can you read the stamping on the right front of the block, on the pad above the water pump pad? that will help narrow it down

I know! It decodes as Flint Truck block.
I just want to know if anybody has a clue why the casting only has 4 numbers. I think it must be worth a fortune!!
