I wanted to see if there was a general consensus on how many ft-lbs "hand tight" is.

I was thinking around 12 ft-lbs... but thats a guess. What do you all think?

turn it until you can't anymore. Then give it one more last heave for a 1/4 turn or so and call it a day

I sorta go For that feel of " if I torque on this anymore, Im gonna break something "

You sorta get used to that point when Yo do alot of wrenching ( and alot of breaking, haha )

And that all depnends on the Size of the bolt, the material Its threading into, and the application.

Be careful with aluminum or old bolts

It also depends on the size of the screwdriver, ratchet handle, or 30" breaker bar!

30" breaker bar, Lets talk about 6' Lenths of 3/4 Galvanized Pipe.
That becomes a Two person Operation.

"Hand tight" is 1/4 before it breaks...

Seriously, though, are you reading it in a manual or something? In my industry, it typically means "without a wrench". I've also seen it refer to tightening with a hand wrench, then torquing it to final with a torque wrench (which assumes your hand wrench has a much shorter length than your torque wrench).
