I have the 9 bolt and want better gears, what do I do

What is the easiest thing for me to do. I hate these 3.27(? or 3.23 whichever it is with the 9 bolt) I know gears are 400 dollars for the 9 bolt, would it be cheaper just to get a new 10 bolt with 3.73 or 4.10 gears???Any suggestions appriciated

My gears for the BW9 bolt were only $265 from DTS. Install ended up being kinda pricey, but that was just a bad choice on my part.

I'll have to look around for the website. Full name is Drive Train Specialists I think. They're out of Michigan.

Went from 3.27 to 3.70. No real numbers to show the difference but it was definetly something I could feel.

Look at the Drivetrain/Transmission forum, there are several threads about gears for 9-bolts.

here are the links:

In 1987 (the year your car was made), GM only put TWO different 9-bolt rears in the Firebirds!! One with 2.77 gears and the other with 3.45 gears! The only way to tell for sure which you have is to get the numbers off the rear end!! Unfortunately, if you have the 2.77 gears, the ONLY gears you can upgrade to are the 3.08's that GM sells!! If you have the 3.45 rear then you're in luck and can upgrade w/out switching to a 10 bolt rear!!

------------------
1986 Trans AM
305 TPI
200,000+ miles (speedo/odometer non-funtional! Odometer reads 142,000)
4 Wheel Discs
9 bolt Borg Warner Rear (2.77's....oh joy) :P
Completely Stock
Soon to upgrade to a 355 converted from TPI to Carb, Edelbrock 750CFM Carb, Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, Hedman Shorty Headers, Stock casting pocket ported heads (2.02/1.60 - 65cc), XE268 Cam, Moroso HEI ignition kit with external MSD Blaster II Coil and an MSD 6-AL Box!!
Current project: Keeping my 305 running until I get my income tax returns!

Many 87 GTAs came with 3.27s as well as ALL 87 Formula 350s.

350's came with 3.27. V6's and maybe 305's came with 3.45.
