350 HO TPI questions

I have a 350 HO TPI out of an 87 IROC Z.

1) What are the differences between a regular 350 and this 350 HO?
2) What colour are the HO's supposed to be?
3) Why doesnt a regular 350 timing sprokets fit? I mean the chain is the same size. The parts store cant find the right one and its not just these guys....its all the guys Ive went to as well!
4) Is this engine an 8 code. The parts store always asks me this
5) Does it take a special oil filter or something? I went to the parts store and bought an oil filter for an 87 camaro with a 350 and it wont fit on this motor. It will fit on my old 350 motor. A part number on that oil filter would be cool too.

Sorry about all the q's Im new to the Fbody world. Im glad Im here now though

Thanks all!
Dennis

I'm not certain what an "HO TPI" might be, but for the VIN designation "8", you should have a 350 TPI. "HO" or not, it's a 350 TPI. There were very few possible 350 engine options, mostly related to a couple different possible camshaft profiles and different exhaust systems. I'm not even sure the differences were available in 1987.

AFAIK, all Chevrolet engines in that era (except for I/C engines) were painted black in passenger cars. Some of the I/C engines were painted specific colors depending on the customer. For example, 262 V-6 Chevys used in many Cat and Komatsu lift trucks were painted a green/gray. 305s sold to Mercury Marine were a black, but with a bit of silver/gray mixed in and at a higher level of gloss.

That engine should use a "regular" timing set. The 1987 model year was the first for factory installed roller cams, and the necessary thrust surface on the rear face of the cam sprocket, so that might solve some of the confusion. The roller setup was the "regular" system from 1987 onward.

The oil filter is possibly a PF 25 (older style) or more likely a PF 52 (newer, smaller diameter style) on that engine. If the old PF25 doesn't fit, you likely have the newer style. "New" is a very relative term, since the PF52 has been used for the last 15+ years.

Thanks for the info.
As for the filter issue I had , I swapped the filter recepticle on the block with one from another 350 and it works fine now.
I found out that the timing sprocket was different on the code 8 engines. The GM dealership in town wants $150 for a new set!!! Price gaugers or what!

Thanks Again
Dennis

Ps Do you know where I can get vacuum schematics for a 5.7 tpi??

Dang your parts stores suck dont they. You need a C-506, that a dynagear nuber that fits your VIN 8 engine. Thats a typical number for azone, they now sock cloytes chains and should be able to give you a good cloytes number either way its only $20.99 for the chain and two gears. Dont have a TPI vac dia here but if no one can pull one up I can get it tomorrow.
