Gas odor! where?

Gas odor! where?
I recently installed a new gas tank and a new
fuel pump. The problem now is every once and a while I have gas smell coming from the car almost like there is a leak but there is not. I have checked every thing for leaks and I can never find any thing even when the smell is strong, which comes and goes no matter how full the tank is. I was wondering if the tank is vented and would the canister purge valve have any thing to do with it? What does that thing do anyway
