What tools do i need??

I am trying to replace my old and defective oil pressure sedning unit (located above the oil filer) and when i tried using this special removal tool designed for that purpose it doesn't go in because it is rubbing against the floor or the car..

What would you use?

And also if i take it off will lots of oil come out of the hole or nothing will come out as the engine will be shut off???

Thanks..

Hello Daniel,

I just used a deep-well socket to replace mine. I think it was a 13/16" socket, don't quite remember at the moment so don't quote it as the gospel. No oil came on me when I changed it.

To the best of my knowledge, the sender by the filter is used just as a backup switch for the fuel pump that closes with oil pressure. If your oil pressure gauge is malfunctioning, thats the wrong sender to replace. The one to get should be on the chinawall next to the dist. If your oil filter has an anti-drainback valve, then yes, you could get some oil. I dont think itll pour out in large quantities, though.

I tried looking for it next to distributor but i could't see anything like that. Could somebody take a pic of this..

Also, when i unplug that sender next to the oil filer, the gauge in the dash goes all the way up when i start the car.. So maybe there is no other sender ????

Thansk..

Hmmm... that is interesting. It is entirly probable that the passage by the dist. is just blocked off and thats the acting sender. In that case, either a deep socket or a wrench will work to remove it. Your local autoparts store should have the unit availiable, jsut make sure you tell them your application as some applications just have a switch instead.

Hello Daniel,

On the 89 models, the oil pressure switch and the oil sending units were combined into one unit. It is located above the oil filter where you found it. I used a deep-well socket to remove mine and did not get soaked with oil gushing out.

They're combined into just the one sender above the oil filter on my 91 Formula, too.

As said, the later models (dont know years) had them combined. My oil pressure guage was acting funny (92) and replaced the thing you are talking about and now the guage works fine.

As far as getting it out, I remember having the same problem you're describing (with the special socket). I think I tried cutting it in half (for clearance) and then grabbed on it with vice-grips. You can also grab right on the sending unit (where the socket would usually go) with small pointy vice-grips.
