Stripped crankshaft insert

Like always my situation was caused from inexpience of this type of project. I was replacing the dampaner and while i was using the harmonic puller i didnt know i had to put that point to protect ed threads and of course it completly destroyed all threads inside the crankshaft. I tried tapping it and I realize I am goin to have to get a hilo-coil. Problem is when I try to just put the bolt in as if it wasnt stripped there is about 1/4 " play before it would actually be tight. So did the puller comact the metal into the crankshaft? Also is there any other repairs instead of hilocoil or welding the harmonic balancer to your crankshaft. All suggestions are welcome. Thank you in advanced.

you should of screwed up less than 1/2" of thread. if chaseing the threads didn't help you need to tap it the next sioze over which should be a metric size or go to 1/2 fine thread, or use a heli coil or other thread insert.

Jes has a good idea. Stud and nut the crank snout.

If you can't clean the thread and get a stud to screw in and bottom in the snout, you can retap to 1/2-20 (the OEM 7/16-20 was a clever selection of bolts by Mr. Cole, wouldn't you think?).

I think we've all done that at least once.

I had to help a buddy of mine do this. We Heli-coiled it. Didn't feel right. That motor ended up not running anyways so he ditched it lol.

Next time be sure to get a balancer reinstaller....so much better.

Where would you find a 1/2" bolt for the harmonic dampaner? Also what is a Heli- Coil, someone told me to do that but I just have not idea what it is?
