hard time starting, smoke..

with my 305 tbi, it always takes like 10 seconds to start if the car has been sitting all night. every few starts it will also blow out some smoke. any ideas on what this could be? leaky fuel injectors? bad timing?

once the car starts everything runs fine. as long as it doesnt sit for more than an hour or so its ok.

Welcome to the boards.

I'm a carb guy, and the only thing I really know about TBI is it's pretty similar to carbs as far as I know... so I'm pretty sure there aren't any fuel injectors on your car.

Timing wouldn't be affected if the car is fine after a few minutes, so I'd bet it's a tuning issue with the TBI. Repost this on the TBI board, I'm sure someone there has a better answer.

TBI does have injectors. It has two big ones that feed a wet flow charge mix into the manifold. That is about all it has in common with carb. You could have a bad oil sending unit which delays the fuel pump from priming if it doesn't see oil pressure right away. Your timing could also be off but that takes 2 minutes to check. It could be too retarded and might need degree or two of advance. I would start with the sending unit. Also, when was the last time the car had a tune up.

not in a long time, which brings me to my next question how much should a tuneup cost? what should a tuneup consist of?

im selling the car to some girl, she's very nice so i'd like to fix everything before i give it to her

i will look into the oil sending unit..

Check out the "new to TBI" thread at the top of the TBI forum. Your tune up questions should be answered in there.

I should learn to not post when I don't know the answer.

No big deal. I just didn't want to confuse anyone who may not know the difference.

You didn't say what color the smoke was........besides needing a tuneup, you might also need new valve guide seals.
