can gears affect emissions?

I talked to someone about this and they told me that I need to correct my speedometer, so the computer"wont get confused" to my speed vs. RPM. Is this right?

I wouldn't know about the computer getting confused, but you would have increased emissions because with deeper gears the engine turns more rapidly at any given speed. More engine rotation @ same mph = more emissions per mile (due to more combustions per mile).

It will not affect emissions, I had my car inspected by the state of New Jersey (one of the strictest places). It was tested on a Dyno machine and it passed fine. I went from a 3.27:1 gear swap to a 3.73:1.

Think about it, No it will not effect emissions as Far as the Smog test is concerned.

What they do In cali here, is ttest you at Idle and at 2500 ( I think ) RPM.

Your gears have nothing to Do with this, last time I checked ) especially with the car In neutral.

Now in the Real World, Lower gears will increase the amount of Pollutants released per Mile you drive, but only because your burning more fuel, due to Poorer fuel economy becasue of the deeper gear.

Logic people, Logic!

No, Lowering your car will not effect emissions either.
