Coil need to be grounded????

I saw in another post that the remote coil on a TPI setup is grounded through the bracket that attaches it and the EGR solenoid to the intake manifold.

Is this necessary? Since putting on my SuperRam, I've just had the coil laying above the valve cover on the heater hoses temporarily, and it seems to be working fine. Just wondering if I'm causing a problem or asking for trouble until I can make my new firewall mounting bracket....

Have a Great Day!

I've heard this also but have had my coil laying on a rag on the window lip with no problems while tuning. I now have it bolted to the firewall

That's a damned good question. In all versions of the HEI (older in-cap and later divorced coil variants) the armature of the coil (metal square around the coil) was ALWAYS grounded. Both in cap and divorced coil. The in-cap version they went to some great lengths to make sure a ground snaked it's way all the way up into the distributor cap, in fact.

Like you, I've run remote HEI coils laying on top of hoses, etc., at least temporarily, and never had a problem. I have always gotten them eventually bolted to a good ground in the long term, however.

I would put this under the general heading of "the factory wouldn't have done it if it weren't necessary."
