Intermittent hard start/no idle

Well, my L98 was running great for a year, suppose sooner or later something would go wrong on it. I just spent a few hundred bucks at Spohn.net getting front end parts, but I can't put them in because I can't drive to the garage.

Enough ranting. I turn the key and hear the pump prime, when I try to start it it'll *almost* catch, then just sit there spinning. It does it when the car is cold, and hot. I was stuck at the store about 30 minutes ago and decided I'd try giving it around 20% throttle while trying to start it. Started right up but if I let the rpm's drop below 1000, the car dies (man, it's hard to steer a stalled thirdgen.) I have an O2 sensor gauge and it reads off the lean scale when all this is happening.

I have 24 lb/hr Accel injectors that I installed 2.5 years ago because the car was just dumping fuel into the engine (I think they were shorted, shop fixed it.) I'm thinking the problem is either the fuel pump dying, the injectors leaking again, or my IAC is stuck closed.

What's all of your opinions on the problem? If it's the injectors, are SVOs better than Accels? The Accels seemed cheap and plastic to me. My fuel pressure gauge doesn't work (last time I lend tools to someone) so I'm trying to get ideas while I find another one.

Update:

Key on, not running the fuel pressure is 46 psi.
Car running, vac line connected the fuel pressure is 38 at idle, 40 if I give it a little gas.
Shut the car back off, key off, pressure is 40, eventually it creeps up to 42/44.

After having the car off for 10 minutes, I lose 4 psi. Then I lose pressure around 3-4 psi/minute for the next 10 minutes. I only watched for 20 minutes but the pressure got down to around 22 psi. Turn the key back on, pressure goes to 40.

I'm stumped.

I decided to replace everything. Holley Avenger in tank fuel pump, SVO injectors, and a Stealth Ram.

That should fix it.

I am having that same problem with my '87 T/A. Another user on the board (Trans87) is having the same problem and he said he narrowed it down to the IAC. Seems as if it was sticking open. I'm going to have a look at it today.

Well if it's the IAC, I'll pout for a few seconds, then remember that I have a stealth ram.

I cleaned my IAC a few months ago, actually. It was sticking then too.

sounds like the IAC. If it was sticking before I'd go ahead and try replacing that before replacing the other parts you mentioned. I don't think it's your fuel pump and a leaky injector wouldn't cause a problem like this. Try this though before you replace the injectors pull the whole fuel rail out of intake with injectors left in and fuel lines still connected. Disconnect the coil and have someone crank the engine while you observe the spray pattern of the injectors.

I'll probably pick up an IAC to cover all the bases. All the new parts show up Wednesday, so I'll be having lotsa fun putting them on.

I'm going to check the injectors before I take them totally off, if they're still good I'll sell them with the TPI unit, and a spare ECU I have.
