High Output Heads

I have a 86' TPI T/A. How can I tell if the heads are High Output or Not?

TPI engine = H.O. engine

if you're not convinced then lift a valvecover and get the casting number. It should end in 416 if they are HO heads.

The HO and non-HO carb heads and the TPI heads are all the same, 416 casting as described above. So there's no way to tell the difference because there is no difference.

James,

The heads are "High Output" in name only. They are a poor excuse for a decent flowing head, even on the smaller bore engine. They can be made to flow much better, and can accept larger valves, contrary to some opinions. The cam is a real impediment to power in this engine, and should be one of the first things you consider. Even if you don't swap the cam soon, plan your efforts around the eventual goal of a better cam profile.

If you've got an '86 TPI/TA, I have some stories for you. There is a lot I've learned about my '86 TPI/TA while trying to make it run like I think it should. Despite what Chevorlet accountants did to thwart Chevrolet Powertrain engineers, there can be some respectable power made from the "little" engine.

A good starting point:

I hope you're not using the original PROM, since the upgraded version is worth every penny.
