FI Engine Choking itself?!

I have a TPI 305 and for some reason yesterday when i was trying to merge into traffic i hit the gas a little hard as usuall to get in without waiting forever. well anyways i did this and when i got into second gear and hit the gas the car all of a sudden started to stutter. i let off the gas and the car idled down and started to act fine again. i pulled my car into a friends house and i checked the throttle and well the car will kill itself if i hit the gas hard. if i only put it halfway then it will jump up and then stutter then jump up again. i put 91 octane in the tank with fuel cleaner and it is still doing it. sometimes if i hit the gas and let go it will idle eratically between 700-200 rpms sometimes acting like it will die then going again. does anyone know what would be some good ideas as to what is going on. o and btw if i slowly press the gas pedal the motor will rev up but i have to do it very slowly. that is why i dont think it is the fuel filter or fuel pump it is just on quick bursts that the engine will choke and kill itself.

But that's when the fuel has to flow thru the filter the fastest. As easy and cheap as they are to replace, I'd change the filter. Do you have a fuel pressure guage? If so, connect it up and let's see what the pressures are doing....

Change your fuel filter. Its cheap enough to do and will probably solve your problem.

How long has it been since your O2 sensor has been changed? That might be on its last legs, but leave that one for last. Do the fuel filter first, and check the O2 later if the filter doesn't help.

if you suspect a fuel delivery problem hook up a gauge and temporarly have it sticking out the hood and tape it to the windshield so you can watch for pressure variations underload

i dont have a fuel pressure gauge but ill replace the fuel filter and see what happens. i havent changed the o2 sensor since i bought it back in july of 03. im also thinking that a good tune up would help. but today when i started the car when it would idle down it sounded almost like i didnt have a cylinder it just didnt sound right so i hope that the fuel filter and a good tune up will help. i let you guys know either today or tomorrow when i get everything done.

My 83 CrossFire did this when I first got it I would nail it and it would stumble then catch changed the fuel filter put new wires and plugs and it ran perfect, it actually idles smoother than my 90 GTA

I checked my fuel filter and it checked out. I checked my MAF and it seemed fine so i ran my SES codes and well i got a 13 and 22 which is for my TPS and my o2 sensor. I'll replace the o2 sensor that isnt a problem im still gonna do the tune-up just cuz its needed but how do i fix the TPS voltage being low? I knew that something has been up because everytime i went on the highway the SES light would turn on and off randomly i figured that something was up because the guy i bought it from replaced the TPS sensor right before i bought it and did somewhat of a hack job on it. the top pin of the 3 pin connector was bent badly and the lower bolt head is snapped. I fixed the pin but still had that happen. Not to make this a major thing because it insnt but if anyone knows a quick fix for the voltage let me know thanks

If your throttle position sensor is bad you will need to replace it there is no fixing it but if not you need to adjust it

Hey I wrote above...I don't know what's wrong with your car but I finally traced mine back to the fuel pump. I first hooked 12v to the fuel pump test terminal (G) on the watchamacallit under the driver side dash and I could hear the relay click over but no fuel pump whirring. I then hooked 12v to the wires going to the fuel pump without the relay on it still no noise....then did the same thing and measured the voltage on the harness near the tank it read the approriate voltage....checked the ground...it was grounded and finally took out the tank and fuel pump and wired it directly to a battery and it just flickers on and off ...more off than on so I popped a new one in and if works wonderfully...thanks for all your helps!

sorry its been so long since ive replied been busy working on my car and some friends cars. Its cool that you were able to figure it out it must have been a pain in the *** to fix the fuel pump with it being inside the gas tank and all. but anyways i replaced my o2 and adjusted my TPS sensor drove the car still had the stuttering and my SES came back on re-ran the codes and found out that my MAF was gone so i replaced that and now im good. so thanks for the help though guys.

Glad you both found your problems. They're not always easy and/or cheap to fix, but it's nice to be able to figure out what's wrong and get them running right again!!!

Have a Great Day!!!
