cant get engine to run right

i got my car running last weekend. i was messin with the distributor and figured out that it was 180 degrees off. when it was running it was backfireing out the carb. the fireing order is right, i checked everything like 1000 times. i had to pump the gas to get it to stay at like im guessing 1000 rpms. i just took the timing cover off to make sure the dots were lined up on the chain gears and they were. now im stumped and dont know what to do. ive double checked and triplle checked everything like a zillion times.

any help is greatly aprecciated.

If it was running at all, the distributor was NOT 180° out of phase with the valve train.

Can you supply a few more details of what started all this?
