popping sound????

i got my car for my 16th b-day (i paid for it) but it wasnt driven for almost a year. when it was first driven it ran great. and now (been driven for almost 1 year) its starting to go down hill. i dont think the engin in it is stock but it is a 305. there was a red hose going around the engin that had a stick stuck in it so it wouldnt make any noise. i took the stick out and it started making a weird popping sound. so i taped it off. it quieted down alot but i can still hear it but its not the same popping sound that was comming from that. i have a popping sound comming out of the muffler.....any ideas....thanks

What was the hose connected to? Id suspect something to with the a.i.r. system, the previous owner plugged it off somehow. does it feel like the hose when unplugged, feel like its pushing or sucking air? Do it maybe connected to your air pump, the one below your air conditioning compressor.

Def. check to see what its connected to, then we can give a better answer.

it does feel like its pushing and sucking air...and i think someone told me it had something to do with the air compressor or air pump....i was also told i didnt need it. but i got a popping sound comming out of my muffler too. and when its popping (pushing air out) theres a very small amout of white or gray smoke that comes out. but its not that noticeable but u8 can still see it

Yea, if it went around the engine then its the A-I-R tube and since you were able to shove a stick in it and antifreeze dident pour out thats a sign. Just reconnect it and the noise will most likely go away unless you have rusted AIR pipes then your either going to need to cap them, replace them or repair them with some slicate hose$$.
