is it using the cc distributer?
If it is ccd i would say go and buy a comp.
If it is not a cc disributer i would recomend that you get another carb.
People have used computer controlled carbs but they run like crap they dump fuel like gas is free. Just get an old style qjet, holley or edlebrock whatever you are most comfortable working on.

If you get a non-CCC, yes you will need a vac-advance distributor.
I've got one if you want to go this route, pulled it out of my L69 when I resurrected the computer. Drop me an email if you want the thing, i'm in Orlando.
Otherwise the computer is replaceable. I got one from Discount Auto Parts for about $80 after core. Only thing is you have to reuse the original chip, or put in an aftermarket one if you don't want the stock chip.
Keep this in mind if you delete the ECM, though: If your car has an auto tranny, you'll need to get a pressure switch put in to control the Torque Converter Lockup. or wire it to a toggle and control it by hand otherwise your tranny will burn up (ignore this if it's a stick shift)
