i just had my engine rebuilt and it going thru about a quart of oil a week it does not smoke at start up just when it gets up to temp.then it smokes real bad especially when you stop then take off. could this be from the high volume oil pump it idles at 50 psi

Nope, the oil pressure won't cause this; you've got some other problem.

Did you have the heads R&R'd during the rebuild? If you did, assuming a competent shop did the work, you can pretty much elimiate guides/seals as the cause.

Engines that smoke on first startup of the day are usually suffering from worn valve guides or valve stem seals. The smoking usually goes away after a few minutes.

Check your plugs to see if any are oil fouled. If only one is, that will let you zero in on the offending cylinder.

If your engine begins to smoke after it reaches normal operating temperature, and if the smoke is coming out of the tail pipe, the your problem may be more serious.

If cast rings were used on the rebuild, then it's possible they haven't seated yet. One way to help them seat quicker is to find a safe area and using second gear, accelerate to about 40 mph then lift off the throttle and let the engine pull down to about idle, then repeat this numerous times.

If doing this doesn't help, then you need to do some diagnostics. Do a compression check on all the cylinders or a leak down test using a dual gauge leakdown tester.

It could be one of the rings was broken during assembly, was installed upside down, installed in the wrong groove or was gapped too wide. I tore down a bad smoking BB engine once that had standard diameter rings installed in a .060 over block; talk about smoking!

If any of these is the problem, you're looking at an engine tear down to correct.

Let's hope it's something minor and easily correctable.
