Anyone have any tricks to remove a stuck oil plug from the side of the block?

Its stuck in the block ive tried PB blaster and broke a rachet trying to remove it. The plug is the one just above the oilfilter. IM swaping my oil pressure sender from the 350 block to the 406. I would like to keep it in the same location. Its proably been in there sence 71...I had the block hottanked and the machine shop left it in there. I have a can of mapp gas and tips for it. Ive heard you can heat them sometimes but have never done it. I dont want to crack the block. Any ideas would be very helpful at this point.

You can heat it up the block around the area and melt some parafin wax onto it. The threads will soak up the wax without evaporating or burning off like oil would. Why would you put the sender there? Do you already have something in the port by the distributor?

If you already have something in the port by the dist. you can always put a "T" fitting on it....that's what I did.

Thanks Guys.. I will try heating it up with the torch. The heat wont hurt the block right? This might be a stupid question...were do you get parafin wax? I guess thats not the same as candle wax?

SCRA rules!.. Thats where it came stock on my 90 above the oilfilter. I wanted to keep things simple. If I cant get the plug out thats what I will do install it behind the distributor.

I'm not sure, but I think parafin wax is like what they put on snow skis. Don't know any place in particular as to where to get it-maybe a sports store? The heat won't hurt anything, as long as you heat a pretty large area, not just right around the plug. Cast iron doesn't like drastic temp changes.

you can buy parafin wax at the grocery store. It's used for canning jelly I think.

Heat the plug, concentrate the flame on the plug. Then give it a spray of oil/WD-40. Do this a couple of times. The cooling of the plug will draw in the oil. Them on your final heating get that plug cherry RED get that wrench on there and give it hell. The wax trick works sometimes, I tried it. You won't hurt the block as long as you keep the flame on the plug. It took me 5 heatings and 2 wrenches to get mine out.

Mike H,

Lol! Yeah they can be a bitch. Keep on heating it. I have had to do this several times to remove the "stubborn" ones. Make sure you let it cool a bit before wrenching on it. Come to think about it..... the really stuck ones need more heat than propane can provide. An acetelyne (to lazy to read the label for spelling) torch burns much hotter and can remove even the most rusted/stuck plugs. Just be carful with the torch, it can melt metal if left on one spot too long. Good luck!

Yes...It came out! The WD40 worked...Thanks alot guys! I also tried a better quality ratchet(Craftsman)The last 2 where cheap sets.

I cant wait to install it in the car. Ive been working on this Engine for 2 years gathering parts when I have the extra cash.
