Starter Shims

I replaced my starter in my car. I drive an 84 L69, all stock. I cannot for the life of me get it right. No matter what - either the teeth occassionally grind the flywheel after it is started, or it doesn't engage properly, makes a high pitch whizzing sound, but then the teeth to hit the flywheel.

The rear mount that holds the back of the starter in place is missing, but it wokred fine before.

Any ideas? I've got 2 packages of shims, but haven't had much luck.

Please help

I have found that when I buy an aftermarket starter from Autozone that they work best with absolutely no shimming at all.

An OEM GM starter that I dropped to test required a shim upon replacement.

So what I'm trying to say is, try it without the shim and see what you get.
