$1000...what to get
I think I posted this previously in the wrong forum. Anyway I will soon have roughly $1000 what could I get on my 92 camaro? I want to have enough power to get some good times at the strip yet want to maintain my gas mileage. I'm sure this is everyone's goal however I want everyones opinions anyway. I ran a search and could not find specific info pertaining to my query.
Thanks,
Rookey
PS - My car has an 350 crate if this helps

lol i dunno what crate it was in the car when I bought it. Its a 350 Gm Goodwrench engine. Nothing has been done to the car except replacing the stock filter with a K & N. I dont mean I want fantastic gas mileage just so I dont have to fill up every day, with todays gas prices who does? I just want to make decent hp at the wheels without using forced induction or nitrous.
Thanks,
Rookey

What induction system do you have? What heads do you have? We need a little more info the "crate engine".
But i can tell you that the first thing that you need to do is replace the entire exhaust system. Starting with 1 5/8 headers and a full 3" exhaust system all the way back.

Yup, more info....give us more info.
Pull a valve cover and give us the head casting numbers, check the engine casting numbers to see what you have. No sense in going any further until you know what you have already. Is this car TPI, or TBI? Sorry if I missed it.
But exhaust is definetely the first place to start, and that should use up a nice little chunk of your loot. Get the exhaust for a TPI car, not for TBI.

Sorry, I'm kind of a newb when it comes to these TPI/TBI engines. As far as I know its just a stock TBI. It was just dropped in to replace the V6. I will check the head casting #'s when I get some free time. I am pretty sure it is just a stock L05.

What kind of exhaust does it have? Does it have headers? If its a L05 the heads are pure crap. Don't use them if you want more then 250hp.

Yea the heads are just stock. The whole car is stock actually lol. The motor is just a stock TBI that was put into it to replace the crappy V6.

If it's a stock L05, then you're alot more than $1000 away from a really competitive motor. But $1000 will at least make a pretty good dent in what needs to be done.
Since it was a 6-cyl car, it's hard for us out here to guess what might have been done with the exhaust. Like was said, it needs the whole thing to be right, all the way from the heads to the street; headers, a high-flow cat, and a good quality cat-back. Get the stuff for a TPI 350, NOT any kind of 305. It all bolts up the same, it's just a matter of pipe size. Get a set of good quality chassis-specific headers such as Edelbrock or SLP, a cat such as a Catco or CarSound, and any of about a dozen aftermarket 3" cat-back exhausts. I highly recommend getting coated headers, as the coating will save you itsr cost in toasted plug wires and other heat-sensitive components many times over during the course of their life.
After that, if you have any money left over, come back, and we'll help you figure out what to work on next.
