pouring water into the intake

When I was in shop class back in high school my teacher taught us a way to clean carbon out of the combustion chambers. He said to rev the engine and pour small amount of water into the carburetor and not to let it stall. Has anyone heard of this and does it work?

Yes. Done it. Don't know for certain that it works, but it stands to reason that it ought to. Just be careful not to pour too much in at one time. You want water droplets to enter the cylinder chambers, not a water stream. Water is pretty much incompressible, so if you pour too fast you could get into a hydraulic lock situation. Good way to shatter a con rod or something.

I was told (I believe by Vader? It was someone on here...) to fill a spray bottle with water, and mist it over the carb.

STOP: Use a fine spray of ATF, not water... It causes the carbon to crack, break away and go downstream... You have to do this for a while, too, not just a second or two...

Marvel Mystery Oil is supposed to be good for this too. However, anything but water runs the risk of washing the oil off of the rings.

I've actually done the water trick with my 79.

I used a spoon to slowly drop a tiny amount of water down the carb, it worked too.

Vaders idea of using the spray bottle is much better, atomization and whatnot.

I did it to clean my plugs, and it did, real well actually.

My shop teacher taught old school techniques and I learned alot from him, so I guess he was right about this. The spray bottle is a great idea I feel safe trying that way better than just pouring it in. Thanks guys

So if I wanted to do this with TPI, I could just open up the throtle plates (with the rubber boot off of course) and spray down that, right?

The spray technique would be about the only way to do this with a TPI system. Yes, just open the throttle blades and spray the mist inside while the engine is running.

Or... park the car on a really steep hill, and maybe you could trickle the water in with a spoon....

Heh, once you get up to an extreme performance level, you can add water injectors that cool th air as it gies into the engine, cooler air gives more gains than a little water in the stream takes away. A little to clean shoudln't cause any probs

A former mechanic I used to work with used to say a little beer in the PCV inlet worked better than water.

This is a dumb question, but it works the same with TBI too right? Just use a little spray bottle and spray while it's running? What does removing carbon actually accomplish?

That's blatant alcohol abuse!

Yes, this will work for TBIs also. Carbs, TPIs, TBI, Crotch-fires, whatever... the intake style doesn't matter at all. In a nutshell, the carbon buildup inside the combustion chambers can become hot spots which can lead to detonation problems. Little chunks of carbon buildup can begin to glow red hot during normal operation, hot enough to start pre-ignition. Also, carbon buildup on the valves can interfere some with air flow.
