ticking from distributor, what could the problem be?

Are all your wires securely clipped onto the new cap? I had one loose one time. It sounded like a sticking lifter! just pushed down on the boot (engine OFF) and it quieted right down. The ticking I heard was an arc hopping the gap.

What engine. If it's fuel injected, you may be hearing the ticking from the injectors ... perhaps you were "looking" for noise? Also, yes, maybe you don't have a boot down all the way on the cap or on a plug somewhere.

Also to add. If you got a bum set cap/rotor. Maybe the rotor is hitting the posts inside. If so, I'll buy it from you because imo aftermarket distribs have way too much clearance.
