help antifreeze leaking from head studs
help antifreeze leaking from head studs
alright here is my problem the heads are studded with arp head studs and when the motor was assembled i used indian head thread sealant on the head studs going into the block after maybe 1/2 hour of run time on the motor the head studs are leaking antifreeze from the threads on the studs (not the nuts or the heads ) just around the treads what would cause this problem and how can i fix it short of replacing the head gaskets what i am asking is can i take the bolts out one at a time (in the torque sequence) and reseal and retorque them and do it that way or will that mess something up i would say about half or better (head studs ) are leaking
p.s. the motor has a supercharger on it but hasn't seen boost yet

Yea, forgot the second part. Seen it done like that before with out problems, but it may be iffy, esp. if you are going to boost. If it were me, I'd take it all off so I could clean everything and chase the crap out of the threads.

I have never, not even once out of all the motors I've seen put together with head studs, seen them not leak.
Your best bet is Loctite PST, or whatever they're calling it now; automotive (NOT hardware store) pipe thread sealant with Teflon. Put it on the nut threads and under the washers and all too, it makes about as good a lube as the various assembly lubes do, so use the same torque specs.

I talked to the guy who did the machine work on the block he said to use permatex #2 and alot of it do one bolt at a time and step torque each one then go to the next one he seams to think it will be fine that way so i am going to try it tonight wish me luck

I always thought of it this way.....
Head bolts $50 and no leaks
Head studs $140, with leaks, plus time, plus Head gaskets(Im sure you could use unfired ones, but I didnt)
Good Luck!!!!!

I put in "bar's leaks" and that stopped all the leaks from the head studs. Asked my engine builder if he had put anything on the threads and he said that he did. Freaked me out getting back from setting the rings with all the steam coming from the studs. Didn't help matters that my timing backed off too, thought I did some major damage first time out with the new engine.
