At the risk of sounding like Dad, what makes you think they might be too tight?

If an intake is too tight, it will run real rough and may even spit back through the intake because when that cylinder fires, part of the charge will escape back into the intake, and may even set the intake charge off. If an exhaust is too tight you'll have a weird little "fsst-fsst-fsst" kind of noise in the exhaust like an exhaust leak, and it will burn the exhaust valve rapidly.

Uh,

Just to clarify......loosen it until you hear TAP..TAP...TAP, then TIGHTEN it 1/2 turn.

Too tight = rough idle, bent pushrods, possible catastrophic engine failure.

Actually, loosen until you hear the tapping, then tighten to the point the tapping stops, then 1/4 - 1/2 turn tighter.

Oh, and if they are too tight, what RB said is correct, but you'll also notice that the engine doesn't want to rev as fast as it should.

without knowing more, and trying to not sound like dad, i'd guess maybe you valve springs are weak and not allowing your valves to really close, or bad part in the ignition, plug, wire, things like that. maybe even you're at the upper limit of your power band and it isn't going to do more.
