Ran out of gas won't start

Hello,

This is a super-lame question. Car ran out of gas, drove it 1/4 mile or so and then it died. Went to get gas, put in about a quarter of a tank or so. Cranks, but won't start. I've heard most likely fuel pump.

Before even trying to drop the tank because it sucks, is there anything else that I can check first that might be an issue? Thanks,

-Dustin

well, you can always check the fuel pump relay first, you should here it click a few times, I believe 3 when you turn the ignition on.

But more than likely it is your fuel pump, same thing happened to me a 2 years ago.. real PITA

It is a good possibility that you have indeed cooked the fuel pump. The pumps in our cars use the fuel to keep them cool. When the gas gets down to a quarter tank, it is wise to fill up. To test the fuel pump, apply 12 volts positive to pin "G" of the ALDL and apply negative to a good ground. If the pump is still good you will hear it. If you are lucky, the problem is just air in the fuel line and the system needs to be primed several times to get the air out. On applying 12 volts to pin "G", I have found that a 14.4 volt cordless drill battery works very well for this.
