external electric fuel pumps...supped to be this noisy?

BRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTT ...loud as all hell , could be because its where the fuel filter was.

could be because the line going from the pump to the afpr is too small causing resistance?

or are they supposed to sound like a vibrator on steroids connected to my floor pan

All depends on what pump you get. My Holley black pump is pretty noisy but you can't hear it after the engine is running.

A few of the stock external Bosch pumps I've been around are fairly noisy. VW mounted theirs on rubber on the CIS systems, and it helped a bit.

Just think about it. You could hear the stock pump when it was inside the tank. Now youve upgraded your pump and put it on the outside. Its gonna be pretty loud.

You can try vadars idea but i wouldnt put in in any kinda of enclosure as heat disipation may be a problem.

Electric pumps are loud period. Nobody running them can argue different. The most common set-up for most racers is any of the Holley pumps Red, Blue, or black because they're cheap and they work. Now keeping with the cheap factor that turns most people on, most just dead head the system with a standard regulator which puts a load on the pump since it's wanting to push more fuel but cant becasue the carb wont take it, so the whole fuel line gets backed up with unusable fuel and bogs the pumps down making them really noisey.

Spending a little...welll alot more for a bypass regulator allows the pump to go full bore all the time and the excess fuel not used needed is pumped back to the tank taking a huge strain off the pump, making it last longer, run quieter, and keeps the fuel in the lines cooler.

When I bought my new pump I went for the A2000 since it had a built in bypass in the pump itself-your gonna pay for the bypass one way or another-this allowed me to keep the return line to my tank at the rear of the car. Now this pump I have is really loud, but it also filled a 1 gallon jug in 12 seconds too, so in laymens terms, it's a bad sumbitch. You can do the rubber between the pump and the car, but I've never seen/heard an electric pump yet that is not loud.

The parts stores stock a very quiet roatary pump that mounts in rubber bushings like Vader mentioned. Its a very reliable pump runs $60 most commonly used for helper pump in larger motor homes. You couldent tell I ran one on my truck it was that quiet.

i knew the pump was gonna be loud.but this sounds unhealthy loud....

my AFPR has a bypass port by the way.

im gonna try running the 3.8 line from the pump to the afpr....i think it might be choking down a lil trying to run thru the factory sized line going to the afpr......cause well....the return line wasnt big enough, and it was the stock line......so....yeah

My Holley blue pump without a return line hooked up was asininely loud. With a return style regulator its now a nice livable hrrrrrrmmmmmm noise... Can't even tell its on when you're inside the car even with the motor off.

yeah...this is a lil too loud...i dunno if its just the pump doing its job....but it sounds like something is restricted and causing it to work a lil too hard....not sure.....im gonna try re running lines today.

If you hard mounted the pump to the frame/body then the noise it makes is going to be amplified by the frame/body. You need to isolate the mounts. Take a piece of thick rubber (old tire works well) mount the pump to the rubber, then mount the rubber to the car.

I will never have an in-line pump again. They are un-reliable and like this post says-NOISY!

I once had to shut the car off at a drive thru bucause the speaker person couldn't hear me over the fuel pump. It was rubber isolated from the frame too Morley.

Uhh sorry, Hun could you turn that off for a minute?

Ive never had a reliability issue with a rotary pump. Usually if it is isolated and happens to be one that is chosen for the correct amount of fuel needed it wont be noisy and not to forget located close enough to the gas tank. Of course in a 3rdgen theres only one good spot to mount an inline pump.

Now theres always the chance the pump you guys have/had is bad, wouldnet be the fisrt time a new part was bad.

I have heard the holley pumps run alot quieter when you run a return line. I am gonna try that since I have a bypass regulator.

I will see how it goes...I have a holley blue waiting to be installed...damn I'm lazy.

my holley blue quieted down a LOT after putting a return line on it. also remember that I mounted it in the spare tire well and rubber undercoated both the outside and inside of that spare tire well to reduce noise. My next step is intalling dynomat in the spare tire well due to there still being some vibration. Much quieter now that I have a return line I must say. Also I run 1/2inch send and 3/8" return lines if anyone wondered. Mallory 3 port and 6-an lines to the carb. Hope this helps you all out.

weird...maybe im being too judgemental....to me it sounds pretty loud.....i got it a lil quiter by running a larger line from the pump to the afpr......also put a piece of ruber between the pump and frame.

BUT not before i discovered my fuel pump itself leaking.

now were talking about the past month ive pulled 3 gas tanks, replaced a friends in tank pump, founda dam HOLE in my tank...patched it twice, didnt work....finally got a tank with a hole in the top of it (free) no problem there since im broke and i never have more than half a tank anyways.......patched that tank....installed this pump.......

so the leaky pump made me less than happy......went to tighten the casing bolts....a bolt broke off in the damn pump....had to disassemble the pump....put it together bass ackwards....drove around for 30 mins.....didnt see a leak after that....

im done messing with gas...lol
