Question about valve seal installation

I just picked up my new valve seals, and there are about 40 pieces in this bag here... (They ARE the GM ones). There are of course 16 small 0-rings, I know one of them goes on each stem, but then I have these big light brown ones, big black ones in the same shape but a little bit smaller hole in the center, and these other big black ones with a blue metal ring around the outside. Which ones go where?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Kevin,

The tan seals (GM) are for the exhaust valves, and the darker browm/black seals are for the intakes. The rubber rings should be installed under the valve retainers. I'm not sure what you mean by "blue matal ring" but there should have been instructions and an installation guide packaged with the seals. The guide is placed over the valve stem tip to prevent tearing the seals on teh valve lock grooves.

Thanks Vader.... as usual you come through. I just wish I had my digital camera back so you could see what I'm talking about. I see what you are talking about with the tan seals, the black rubber insert in the center of it has the number "244" on it. Then I have some black ones, same exact shape, but the rubber insert hole looks a little bigger, and has the number "16" on it. Now the third one is all rubber, but has a small shiny metal ring and a flat blue metal ring around it. On top it has a varying number, an "IN", and an "IPC".... I assume that this is the one for the intake valve then. Yes, the instructions are here but it just says how to install them, not which ones to use on the exhaust though, I don't see how I could use both.

Any pointers that you can give me to make this go easier?? I have the compressor, my mech friend at the Pontiac dealer loaned me his air fitting and spring compressor.... I'll be doing this tomorrow night and could use every trick in the book!! Thanks Vader!

The GM valve seal kit comes with 8 extra valve seals, you will use the smaller of the set for yours more than likely. I have never used the ones with the large inside diameter. I do know that they fit some TBI heavy duty engines, such as in 1-ton step vans and stuff. I believe it was the exhaust valve that was bigger because they had them sodium filled?
Anyways use the black ones with the 2 spring clips on the intake valves. Use the tan plastic nylon ones on the exhaust valves. The O-rings are to be installed on the 2nd groove of the valve stem After you reinstall the spring and cap (retainer).
Its tricky to do as you need to hold the valve spring compressed while trying to install the O-ring at the same time, after the o-ring install the 2 valve locks (keepers)

Thanks also, Joseph. The instructions don't say anything about those O-rings, I would have wondered where they went if you hadn't told me.
