Can't apply torque to crank pulley bolts!!!!

On my '89 IROC with an auto tranny I am trying to torque down the bolts on my new underdrive crank pulley. With the car in park and e-brake on it simply turns as I apply torque to the crank pulley bolts. Any ideas on how I can tighten these bolts to their respective torque values??

It was very easy to do this mod on my '87 T-5 car!!

Thanks!

Pull off the access cover for the torque converter and jam a screwdriver into the ring gear teeth. It helps to have someone helping you.

Impact wrench, get a TDC finder that threads into the spark plug hole and put it in. Get a cylinder with the piston down and pull the plug, push some rope down into the cylinder. When the piston comes up it the rope will compress and then stop the piston and allow you to torque the bolts. Then spin the motor the other way to allow yourself to pull the rope back out.

No theres an easier way - pull the e-brake and put the car in drive. When you put the car in park, the drivetrain locks, but the engine can turn freely. When in drive, the engine and drivetrain are connected, but since the e-brake is on, the drivetrain can't move, so neither can the engine.

I thought the torque convertor needs to spin fast enough to get fluid transfer going though. I'd imagine the crank pulley would still spin, even though the car's off and in drive.

CAREFULLY take a large pair of pliers and put a rag in the jaws. You can then gently grab the bottom pulley and prevent it from turning.

I watched the 3rd ring gear get put into my Rear end, they guy torqued it down using his hands an an impact wrench. If you don't have one, the air compressor will cost about $120-$130, and the impact wrench will cost ~$30-$40. I have seen some electric impact wrenches, but my dad didn't have much luck w/ them

Apparently you forgot the function of the Torque Converter. You also have not tried this, or you would have realized it does not work.

Put together w/ an impact wrench!?!?!? Did you ever stop and think maybe that is why its the THIRD RING GEAR?
