Bigger alternator

Hi,

I am thinking about getting a bigger (108A)alternator for my T/A. Do you think I will feel some difference in acceleration?

Later,

105 amps is the stock alternator output, so I really doubt 3amps is going to make any difference in anything, really.

I have a low output alternator in right now (~63amp). It had 94 amp when it was new.

Nonni,

There will be a big fat ZERO increase in performance from a larger alternator. As a matter of fact, if the battery is discharged, the larger alternator will suck more power from the engine to make more watts to recharge the battery faster, just because it can. If your MSD box is starved for power, it will cause some problems, but they typically only require 10A at high RPM, and much less at idle speeds.

Check the RPO label in the center console compartment. If the code "K90" is present, your original alternator should have been a 108A unit. The extra size was used for cars with AC and the electric cooling fans. If you don't have TPI, you probably got the smaller alternator from the factory, but it should still be adequate to provide charging with the accessories running.

Unless you are experiencing low voltage at idle, and inadequate charging, I wouldn't worry too much about a larger alternator.

My volt gauge reads below 13V (sometimes well below) at idle, and I know my alternator is not in good shape.

I know I will not get more power, I was affraid I would feel less power. I have had an 108 alternator in my Blazer with 350 without any problems, perhaps I should just try it on the T/A.

Do you have underdrive pullies? This will cause the voltage output to read less than 13 volts at idle (unless you have ALL your accessories on).

With a stock alternatore and stock pullies you should seldom read below 13 volts unless all the accessories are on, including the electric rear window defogger.

bigger alternators do take much more horsepower to turn.
