Done with valve seals, now a question....

I just finished replacing the valve seals and for the most part had no problems... no lost keepers or anything like that. Most of the old o-rings were either hard & brittle or just gone, but when I was compressing the spring on #6 the spring compression tool slipped off the nut on the stud and the o-ring went flying. I couldn't find the damn thing, so I left it off the #6 exhaust valve. Is this going to make a BIG difference?? I don't know where I would get another one, but if you say it's a big deal, I guess I should be able to find one somewhere. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

It will be fine. All the O-ring does is keep the oil that gets trapped in the center of the retainer from running down the valve stem and through the valve guide. Strictly drip control. They really only make a difference on the intake valves.

As RB stated, no biggie.

I never put the O-rings back on when installing umbrella or positive seals.

Never had a problem with oil burning of any kind.

Kevin,

I knew that wouldn't take you too long to complete. Which of the seals did you use?

I used the tan ("natural") colored ones, apparently the black lookalikes are for the bigger valves. The black with the two metal rings around them went on the intake, stupid me, I should have known to just put on what came off instead of asking a dumb question on here before. Anyway, pretty much everything went well, now I just have to set valve lash like Biochem and RCR told me in a different post. Thanks for all your help, and I do mean everyone who pitched in and made this job a lot less stressful than I thought it would be. You guys are great.

I should have the injectors back by the end of the week from Cruzin, and hopefully have the ol girl up & running by next Monday. I'm just hoping I get everything put back together properly, the plenum & runners are no problem, I've yanked them a few times before, but this time I have the whole fuel rail and all those egr hoses that run underneath the plenum to route again, and some of them were pretty old & brittle and they broke. I'll have to figure out how to fix that, I hear Oregon has some pretty strict emissions laws now and I'll be back that way next month.
