EGR Heads
Changing the intake on my 87 305 and I was wondering, this has EGR and I can see the extra ports for it on the intake, but on the head there is no corresponding port.
Is this normal?
I've only worked on older cars w/o EGR, so I don't know what it's supposed to look like.
Anyone have a picture they could post?
Numbers on the head are 14101081 H046
I'll be looking those up to see what it's got.

No, the surface is smooth and hard.
There was a lot of carbon buildup on the intake ports, but nothing similar on the head.
I'll take pictures tonight, although I'm hoping to have the new intake on and functioning tonight also.
The casting numbers indicate that it's for an 87-95 305, so it would appear to be the correct head.

Maybe you have Corvette heads? They didn't have EGR in the heads.. it was routed outside the heads.

081's are cast iron LG4/LB9 heads. They should have the exhaust cross-over passages.

The heads have the exhaust crossover, I was wondering if there were seperate ports for the EGR on the head.
On the intake, between the exhaust crossover, and the intake port, there are two small ports side, by side. Those were the ports I was talking about. And those don't have anything on the head they would correspond to.
From this picture, it looks like I'm just cornfused...

Okay, I think I understand your question now.
The EGR is fed exhaust gases by the cross-over passage in the head to the intake manifold. The gases are allowed into the fuel/air flow by the EGR valve via passages internal to the intake manifold.
The cross-over passages were in the heads before the days of EGR, and the factory took advantage of the fact that they were there when EGR came into the picture.

Those ports you were referring to are for the EGR. There is NO corosponding port opening on the head. This is normal. Just make sure that you use an intake gasket with a sealing surface for those ports (gaskets without will work for a while but usually the heat and exh pressure causes them to blow eventually.
Hope this helps.
