basically the knock senser tells when you have knock and the est (eletric spark timing) changes the timing to eliminate the knock. this change in timing may not be the best setting for preformance.

it's supposed to be a safeguard so you don't blow the motor with detonation (too lean, bad fuel etc..).

Knock sensor (like a microphone) listens for knock then tells your ecu. Then it takes away timing.

TPI motors get too much false retard. Can be caused by roller rockers...headers..tc

I plan to disconnect mine and see if I notice a difference.

It's supposed to retard timing by 10 degrees when knock is detected.
