Cooling fan switch problem, think its related to engine ground straps HELP! :(
Hey guys im sick of turning (or forgetting eek) to turn on my home rigged fan switch so I was hoping you guys could help me get this fixed
The black wire that goes into the fan switch on my pass side head when grounded (which is what the fan switch is supposed to do when it gets hot) will turn my fan on...
This stopped working after a long drive so i bought a new fan switch (wells sw500) from autozone and it still didnt work
(of course i reconnected the connector and wire...found a spare and have tried various combos and all should have been conductive so i know thats not my problem there)
So Ive decided to try and fix this today, ive used a test light from the starter to the switch with the engine at 230-240 degrees and no ground, when i touched any part of the chasis with the starter bang light came on in the tester
I just thought of this when I got up, maybe one of the engine ground straps isnt working, making it impossible for the fan switch to get a ground even if it is closing and opening?
Im gonna go check that out now by grounding the test light to a clean part of the engine nearby the fan switch and getting + from the wires on the starter
It is my understanding the light should come on and if it doesnt i must have a bad ground strap somewhere
Any ideas, suggestions? also where are the ground straps located?
sorry this post is so long

The light should light up... The engine ground straps are located on the passenger side cylinder head in the back (there are also some on the drivers side)...

try hooking up a set of terminals from your ohmmeter to the switch, then heat up a pot of water/antifreeze (so it can go past 212*), stick a thermometer in the pan, then wait for your ohmmeter to read no resistance. that way you know you have a good switch before you put it in.
