cooling fan problem????

When I sit at idle for a long time, like a stoplight or a drive thru, my cars temp skyrockets. It will sometimes stop at about 220ish. But it has been up to almost 240ish. This is cooking the engine. As soon as I take off again, it shoots right down.. right to about 180 to 190. I have a 180 thermostat, what temp should the cooling fans kick on at?? do i have a bad switch, if so, where is it??? I would think that the fans would kick on before it got to like 240..damn..thats hot..i have a fairly new water pump..NAPA replacement...stat is new too...can i get a switch to turn the fan on quicker???

Thanks in advance

Could be the fan switch or connector. I just had the same problem. Its on the back side of the passenger side head by the exhaust manifold. It gets so hot the connector just falls apart. It should be pretty obvious if its bad or not. Mine just crumbled.

if im not mistaken the fans should come on at about 220 but im not too sure since i still have the belt driven fan(soon to go for dual electrics )
