A/C Questions

I have a few questions/problems on retrofitting my 86 ta to r134a.

I got the kit today and installed it. I put one can in and the compressor started cycling again. Here are my questions:

1) How many 15oz cans does it take to fill the system?
2) My compressor is leaking the newly added can out one of its seams. In the back of the compressor it has a sensor with a wire coming off of it. I have another compressor from an 85 z28 that does not have that sensor. Does anyone know what that sensor does? Can I replace my current with one without the sensor?
3) My alternator with the a/c running is at 13.55 volts. Is that too low? it goes to 14 when AC is off.

Thanks...hoping to feel cool ASAP after getting above questions answered!

Does your '86 have the dual fans on the radiator? If so, then that sensor could be for the secondary fan switch. The second fan only goes on when the computer realizes the A/C is turned on. Since I removed my A/C completely a few days ago, I'm going to try and wire up my fans so they both come on as the primary fan.

That alternator reading might be okay...what's your battery's charge at as soon as you turn the car off? If its around 12.4ish volts, then its charging just fine (sorry I don't know exactly what the alternator should be outputting).

My car has the single fan on it. The compressor is definetly beat. I searched NAPA and a replacement is like 300 bucks...definelty steep. That is why I wanted to try the other. The #'s don't match up though. Mine say 529 on the side and the other spare (without sensor hole) says 328. They look the same but I guess there is some difference.

My battery reads 12.91 after car is off and surface charge removed (i.e. turn on headlights) after shutting car off. I read this with my digial Volt ohm meter.

I really would like to know the capacity I am supposed to use (the can says 85% of r12 capacity) but I don't know what that is. and if there is anyway I can try to use that other compressor.

Thanks

85%percent is a genneral number. I would start at 80 and see if that works alright and then keep adding. The amount of r12 required will be on a sticker either on the hood or on the compresser itself.

Whoa dankhound, where do you live in Bloomingdale, and what's your car look like? I got a black '88 Trans Am with the black snowflake wheels and a fading paint job. I live off of Army Trail Road just east of Glen Ellyn Road across the street from that big blue and gold church..

You live right behind my house. I live off byron. I have a green 91 rs but i havent been driving it alot lately. I was looking for that sticker on my car and i couldnt find it. How does the ac work with the 15 oz can in? Youll probably have to add another half can considering those cans are usuall 12 oz and the sytem should take at least 1.2 lbs. I would add a little at a time untill you get some ice cold ac.

Is your address like 320 or 324 or something and you have a couple Integras too? Sorry for bringing those up on this board if that's you 4

My 2nd cousins live at 322, and I know there's a Camaro a few doors from them. He used to have an '86 IROC-Z actually that I had considered buying, but it had rust on the doors pretty bad and he was asking way too much for it I thought.

EDIT: Just realized you said off Byron, which sidestreet? A, B, C, D, E, or F?

I'll have to check my sticker tomorrow for ya.
