help me! Overheating Problems
help me! Overheating Problems
I have a 92 camaro RS with a 305tbi (mostly stock with hypertec termomaster chip and racing shocks and struts). Ive had the car for over 2 years now. Every time the weather gets 75 or above the car overheats with the aircondition on, but as soon as i turn the air off the car goes back down to 160. If I sit in traffic for more than 5 mins the heat goes up until i speed up.
Ive taken it to different shops, ive tried changing the freeze plugs, fan motors, water pump, i put a 160 thermostat in, new radiator cap, hard wired the fan to run all the time...what else can i try or at least what can i do to prevent or slow down the overheating..

thers a relay that turns the fan on only when you use the a.c. if its bad and you use the ac then the fan wont come on... and youll overheat...everytime!! i have this very problem too and i dont have ac!!its only at low speed ,..yeah i can relate! i also have a griffin dual 1" core rad!! i think i just need to change to a 160 from 180?! if you have the fan wired to run ALL the time then the problem is maybe batt. power is too low or you need a new fan altogether!! like a perama cool part#771-19115 it's through jegs and is 88$and moves almost 3,000 cfm of air!! thats like 2,000 more than stock!! and only pulls 9 amps of juice from the batt. hate to tell you about the expensive part...but im facing that reality also so your not alone!!

I'm getting a BeCool Radiator and quit messing around. I have the same problem with overheating, but I know it's because of my mods and living in Texas and I've done everything I can other than a better radiator. I could back down the timing to help, NAH!
Hey jc,
Make sure your air dam is intact, that your A/C condenser is clean and not blocking air flow. Also check between the condenser and radiator, you would be amazed at the collection of debris that can accumulate there! If all else fails, follows Flash's lead and get a BeCool.
Hey Flash,
I saw a HUGE improvement after I installed my BeCool Radiator. I'm sure you will too! I live in South Florida so I know what kind of heat you are dealing with in Texas!
Good Luck,
Ken

When You got your becool radiator, did you get a stock replacement or did you get a bigger radiator. also where did you get and which one ? thnx
also, im wondering if this overheating problems is common with all camaros?
Does anybody know this? =)

Hey jc,
The overall dimensions are approximately the same, slightly larger both in height and width (very snug fit, had to reshape a little sheetmetal for the width on my car!)
The core is much thicker than factory, just about same width of endcaps, also thicker than factory. It is designed as a drop in replacement for our cars, with little or no modifications required. They give you a piece of stainless steel to extend the upper radiator support to compensate for the added thickness. (No hardware for it, though
)
I bought mine from Summit, don't remember the part #, depends if you have auto or manual trans, and satin or polished finish.
Based on the number of posts on this board, overheating seems to be the most common problem we all face with our cars.

I have the same car but with a 350, and what I would recommend is to install a dual fan setup. That cured my problems, I installed a couple of mini sp/st switches below the cig lighter and a couple of relays under the hood and now the only time it will overheat is when I forget to flip a switch.
I don't know if it makes a difference or not but if use a 160 thermostat don't you need another chip?

Ive had the same problem ,espically when I turned the ac on,gm has crappy cooling systems, solution... get the dual fans set up.(the ones the z;s have) now with the ac on she wont go over 160. Hey jcjohnson
theres a salvage yard called ATOMICS here in Dallas and I got my dual fans for $30 with a warrenty...
