you CAN, you don't have to, though. The lift on the peanut cam is small enough that even with 1.6 rockers you dont max out the springs.

the peanut cam is .350/.384" lift with 1.5 rockers. With 1.6 it's .373/.410" lift. If you do upgrade, a simple spring like the 981 would probably work ok. They may or may not require work to the valve guide, however.

do you think it would make any noticable change or a change in the exhaust tone?

Nope. Power, you will gain something. Doubt you will see anything on the sound.

get self aligning.

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...27&prmenbr=361

these are what i had in mind for my 89 lo3.

really not much difference from which brand. i chose these to make it easier when it comes to smog. i can show paperwork for all my mods.. except my tpi headers saying i lost that paper and they will hopefully believe me

edit: might i add, get the 3/8" studed ones

self aligning is what you will need. Some of the best budget pieces i have seen are the ones offered by Comp Cams; their Magnum line (steel roller tip). They are available in all versions. Both 1.5 or 1.6, in either self aligning or non.
