Use Hand Pump as a Vacuum Guage ??

I want to buy a hand vacuum pump and also a vacuum guage. These things aren't as cheap as I thought they would be.

I noticed the hand pump has a vacuum guage on it. It's the pump with the reservoir attached to it for bleeding brakes. Is there some way I can make this or some other hand pump double as a vacuum guage, so I can use it to create a certain vacuum, and also to measure existing vacuum at vac hoses ?

Thanks

GTA,

Yes. Just close the "dump" valve on teh vacuum pump and connect the vacuum source to the fitting on the pump. You should read whatever vacuum is applied to the hose.
