V6,

The idle is likely a symptom, not a cause. The idle would be high if there were a vacuum leak. However, 1,000 RPM in neutral or park on an automatic trans vehicle is not unacceptably high. Idle speed is set with the tramsnission in DRIVE and the wheels blocked. Target idle speed of 600-650 RPM in DRIVE can result in a 900-950RPM free idle speed.

The 8 MPG problem is something entirely different. You should probably check all the basic ignition and fuel system components and settings, then recheck mileage. A failing oxygen sensor can also cause an excessively rich mixture and poor fuel mileage.
